Penance

I came to see you today
Yet all I talked about was her
I should have spoke of the joy of new life
maybe told you of the day's events
Instead I sat shadowed in past
I asked you for forgiveness
and got an answering smile
That's how you always were
You lived in happiness
You stormed the world with that beaming smile
So different... you two were
I see your family hurt
hurt the way I should have for her
and the tears finally come
Years too late
That gracefully carved stone calms me
even seeing your name etched so clearly
can't seem to tarnish what I feel
Maybe this is my penance
I grieve for you both
as if time is nonexistent
